Can’t wait for Bridgerton’s third series? You no longer have to. A Queen Charlotte Bridgerton spin-off is coming to Netflix later this year, entitled Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, and focuses on, you guessed it, a young Queen Charlotte, Bridgerton’s iconic monarch.
The prequel will focus on Charlotte’s rise to power and feature both series newcomer India Amarteifio as the younger Charlotte and Golda Rosheuvel returning as the older queen.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is being developed by many of the same creatives as the main show, including series creator and writer Shonda Rhimes, and you can expect the same lavish set designs and production quality. It’ll tell Charlotte’s tale as a limited series, with eight episodes chronicling how she came to be the character we know and love from Bridgerton.
We meet the young future queen as she arrives in England, and finds that the royals aren’t quite what she was expecting. She meets and falls for King George, and the show will, in classic Bridgerton style, be essentially a love story, with the usual courting and back-and-forth dialogue. And it’s not just a young Charlotte who we’ll see for the first time: both Violet Bridgerton and Lady Agatha Danbury will appear as well, giving us a real glimpse of how things were in the early days.
Connie Jenkins-Greig and Arsema Thomas will be playing the young Lady Bridgeton and Lady Danbury, respectively, with both Ruth Gemmell and Adjoa Andoh returning to play their older counterparts. Corey Mylchreest, recently seen in The Sandman, will be opposite India Armarteifio playing the young King George, and Game of Thrones’ Michelle Fairley will play Princess Augusta. Rhimes and Netflix were keen to tell the story of the queen, and how “the young queen’s marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton.”
